KGNS-TV launches a first for Laredo...High Definition

By Ray Gomez

The countdown is on as KGNS-TV is only hours away from broadcasting in high definition giving viewers the best picture and sound available.

With HDTV and DTV, what does it mean and how can you benefit?
Your Good Neighbor Station is getting the party favors ready to celebrate the local broadcasting of NBC programming in HD. And becoming the first local television station to broadcast in high def. And while the news is exciting, there are some requirements that must be met. With local high definition being offered, football fans are getting ready for the biggest game of the year and so is your Good Neighbor Station. On Sunday watching the Super Bowl will be like sitting right in the stands. “It’s the best picture quality, the best sound quality and as most people that have an HDTV know, it’s the best in television viewing,” says General Manager Carlos H. Salinas.

It all kicks off at 7pm on Thursday, January 29th. With NBC high definition programs including My Name Is Earl, The Office, ER, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, NBC Nightly News and yes, the Super Bowl will air locally in HD. To see the picture at the best HD quality, a few things are required. People who own an HDTV need an HD antenna. Antennas run anywhere from $8 to $60. The better the antenna - the better the picture. External antennas are best. Those with Time Warner, Dish Network and Direct TV will have to wait for now. The high defintion signal will be available over the air, which is the truest high definition quality. “In order to receive the HD signal through your cable or satellite provider, you would need to call your provider and request that they carry it.”

In the meantime, businesses across the city are joining in to help celebrate the brighter and clearer future of television. Secur-It and Inter National Bank partnered with KGNS because they understood the importance of HD. Edna Gonzalez of Inter National Bank says, “I think this is wonderful thing for Laredo since HD is here. It is the future and is the way of the future.”

KGNS-TV will be celebrate the official launch of high definition television tomorrow. Tune in to Pro 8 News at 5 and 6 p.m. on Thursday as we countdown the final moments until the launch.
