Cite and Release Initiative possibly coming to Webb County

By Ray Gomez

The Sheriff's Department is looking into an initiative many other counties are trying out.

It's the Cite and Release Initiative that nearby counties announced they would start implementing.

For people who are normally arrested for minor offenses, or misdemeanors, offenders would now get citations instead of being arrested.

The Webb County Sheriff's Office has that plan in mind and have consulted with the District Attorney's office.

They say this new initiative sounds like a good idea because it would prevent jail overcrowding.

In other counties, they're only giving citations for offenses authorities say would not be a threat to public safety.
