On January 7, 1956, we went on air as KHAD-TV, broadcasting NBC, CBS and ABC programming.  And on September 1, 1958 the station became part of Donrey Media Group.  As their first order of business, the new owners held a contest for students on both sides of the Rio Grande to rename the station. The winning entry generated the call letters K - G - N - S, which stand for Good Neighbor Station.  From 1985 until 2005, KGNS was part of Century Development Corporation.

KGNS has been owned and operated by SagamoreHill Broadcasting since December 1, 2005.  KGNS' network affiliates are NBC, The CW and Telemundo.  KGNS proudly launched "Your CW" on September 18, 2006 and Telemundo Laredo on October 29, 2007. KGNS knew these networks would be well received due to their good quality, family programming.

KGNS is a proud member of the Love Network, hosting the annual "MDA Jerry Lewis Telethon" since the mid-1980's.  Don't forget programs like One Class at a Time, Youth of the Month, Special Student of the Month and the Friends of the Family's, 8th Grader of the Month. In 2006, KGNS started a new Laredo tradition: broadcasting the Anheuser-Busch Washington's Birthday Parade in its' entirety.  Also, in 2006, KGNS became a permanent part of Mission Give Laredo, which benefits the Bethany House. KGNS also hosts the annual Pennies for Tennies Telethon, quarterly blood drives, a drive to benefit the March of Dimes, a school supply drive, Christmas gift drive as well as flu shots in the fall.

KGNS-TV offers newscasts on all three of our networks.  Pro 8 News on KGNS offers five weekday newscasts 12, 5, 6 & 10 p.m., as well as two weekend newscasts, 5 & 10 p.m. "Pro 8 News Today," Laredo's only locally produced morning show, launched September 4, 2001.  And has since celebrated its' 8 year Anniversary in 2009.  For a look back, click on the following link: http://www.pro8news.com/news/57312232.html .  We also proudly launched Laredo's "First News at 9p" which began on Your CW on June 23, 2008.  And "En tu Casa", which launched on May 16, 2010 (Sun 10a.m.) and "Telenoticias", which launched on November 18, 2010 (M-F, at 10 p.m.) on Telemundo.  In September of 2009 Telemundo Laredo welcomed a new member to our family,  Lupita Benavides a veteran in the news industry and a very well respected journalist.  Under her leadership, we launched a new tradition for Laredo, "Telemundo En Tu Casa", a news and information program aimed at serving our Spanish speaking population, with what matters most to them...local news.  Telemundo...En tu Casa was received with a great following and it is because of this following that we proudly launched "Telenoticias...Informacion a tu Alcance" on November 18, 2010.  After the initial launch of Telenoticias, veteran Sports Anchor Roberto Galvez  joined the Telenoticias team as Sports Director.  Telenoticias airs on Telemundo Laredo, Monday-Friday at 10 p.m.

KGNS also has Laredo's only meteorologist with Chief Meteorologist Richard "Heatwave" Berler, C.B.M. on Pro 8 News for over 33 years.

KGNS (NBC) became the first local television station to broadcast a digital signal, having launched on April 8, 2004.  Your CW & Telemundo Laredo launched over the air digital signals on October 8, 2008.  These signals can be viewed on Digital 8.1 (NBC), 8.2 (CW) & 8.3 (Telemundo).  And in November 2008, KGNS (NBC) began broadcasting NBC programming over the air in HD, making KGNS the first local television station to broadcast in High Definition.  This was made possible through a special partnership and grant with Secur-It...Home Theater and Inter-National Bank...Lifestyle Banking.  With the official launch being held on January 29, 2009.  And our KGNS-HD signal is also available on Dish Network, with it officially launching on July 8, 2009.  If you have any questions about your HD or Digital reception, please let us know by contacting us at hd@pro8news.com.

And we're proud to say that KGNS was the first station to launch a locally produced and maintained website, having launched in August of 1999.  Early on the website was focused on our community with links to local groups and organizations...offering a script form of our news coverage.  Then on June 16th, 2008 the site was re-launched with the addition of more Local News, Weather and Sports.  Along with features such as our "One Class at a Time", "Eighth Grader of the Month", our "Community Bulletin Board", Blogging, TellUsMore.com, a list of our Great American Business Club partners, as well as a snapshot of the current conditions built in to our header.  All this giving our visitors the information they're looking for, on their computers and mobile devices at the click of a button.  Pro8News.com truly is...Where You Need Us, When You Need Us.  And www.pro8news.com also gained national attention in helping apprehend a wanted man.  You can revisit this story by clicking on the following link: http://www.pro8news.com/news/local/30660069.html .  And in August of 2006, Pro 8 News as part of our Friday Football Fever sports program, which began in 1993 launched Laredo's only high school sports based website Friday Football Fever, further demonstrating our commitment to local sports.

KGNS, Pro 8 News, www.pro8news.com, Your CW, www.cwlaredo.com , Telemundo Laredo and Telenoticias thank you for making your Good Neighbor (Family of) Stations a Laredo icon. We truly appreciate your patronage and will continue to serve you with pleasure.
