Yoko Romo?

Word around the campfire is that Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson are on the outs. I’ve been contemplating what this means in football terms all day long. Did Jessica Simpson really have some sort of effect on Romo’s performance on the field? I don’t think so… not directly anyway. I think she is just a byproduct of the celebrity lifestyle.
Before Bill Parcells left Dallas, he gave Tony a list of quarterback commandments to live and play by. One of them read, “Don’t be a celebrity quarterback!” I think he crossed that line way before Simpson came along. If it wasn’t Jessica, it would have been some other starlet, maybe Meagan Fox (Smokin’ Hot girl in Transformers). It seems to me that Tony is fully aware of what being the starting QB of the Cowboys can get you. The question I ask myself is, has Romo concerned himself more with what the Cowboys can do for him, than what he can do for the Cowboys?
Great quarterbacks are cut from the same cloth. Name one other NFL quarterback’s spouse or girlfriend, besides Tom Brady’s supermodel wife… it’s not easy to do. I think Peyton Manning’s wife develops real estate, or at least she used to.
Here is where I reach my personal dilemma. Can we really chastise Romo for embracing the celebrity lifestyle? How would you or I react if we rose from obscurity and were made the starting quarterback, on the most popular team, in our country’s most popular sport? I can’t speak for any of you, but I know I wouldn’t mind dating the likes of Carrie Underwood or Jessica Simpson.
Here is the conclusion that I have come to. If she truly is out of the picture then I am glad; not because I don’t like her or I think she is affecting his play, but because now there are no excuses. I think we can all agree that Tony has not lived up expectations thus far. Let’s see if he can silence his critics in 2009. Let me know what you think.

Jerry Jones is going down the same road Al Davis did, and look at the Raiders today. JJ, like Al started out ok but then got in their own way. Yes, we need a tough coach willing to stand up to JJ but its not going to happen. I agree Romo shouldn't carry all the weight and it does take a team: owner, coach, trainers, players, etc. But JJ thinks he's a football genius (not). So while I think Romo does have "it" I think he won't hit his potential until he leaves the Boys' (prob. next year).

Whether Romo has enough to win the big game has yet to be seen. But it sounds like so far, commenters feel like the Cowboys inability to win a playoff game during the Tony Romo era shouldn't be pinned on just the quarterback. Football is most certainly a team game. But team attitude and identity can be traced back to the head coach; is Wade Phillips the problem? Or is there an even bigger issue in Jerry Jones repeatedly hiring coaches that are soft and submit to his will? Keep sounding off!

Great teams make great QBs. How many Superbowls did Montana win w/the Chiefs? 0. Romo may not have the mental toughness of a Tiger Woods but he has enough to win big games; given a decent line and a couple of playmaker receivers. Bottom line: football is a TEAM sport. Ever wonder how many Superbowl rings Tom Brady would have if he played for the Lions or Big Ben if he played for the Browns.

Great point! The offensive line during Aikman's days was better than the current. I dont think anyone is questioning Romo's physical toughness. Its his mental toughness and leadership that are lacking. Did anyone see his press conference after they got smoked by the Eagles in the last game of the year? He seemed indifferent at best about getting stomped and subsequently knocked out of the playoffs. Keep the great comments coming!

Romo's "problems" have more to do with an inconsistent offensive line than any off-field antics. The enormous size and athleticism of the Cowboy line should have them dominating the NFL, but they don't. Romo can scramble better than Farve or Staubach and is as tough as Marino ever was but you can only move and get hit so much. Troy (most overrated QB ever) has the rings because he had the protection, give Tony the same and watch what happens. "Jessica" is just media-created hype.
