In Depth: Nixon Mustangs

By Michael Blake

The Mustangs finished 1-9 last season and are eager to return the program to its former glory. Nixon brings in first year coordinators on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. They have seen higher than ever turnout during voluntary summer workouts and hope this will help them excel in 2009.
Nixon’s offense uses their own unique interpretation of the spread offense that utilizes both the pass and the run. The Mustang offense was on life support last season. Problems protecting the quarterback kept them from being consistent, but that should improve with the majority of last year’s starters returning.
On the defensive side, Nixon will use speed rushes from the defensive ends and outside linebackers to create havoc in their opponent’s backfields. Experience in the secondary should round out what seems to be a stable defense for Nixon in 2009.
The fortunes of the Nixon Mustangs will ride on the play of their offensive and defensive lines. Their skill players on both sides of the ball are solid and have plenty of on field experience. If they are given the freedom to operate this team could make a run a the playoffs.
