With recent talks about a new baseball park we now learn that the new stadium may mean bad news for the Broncos.
As city officials begin to narrow down their pick as to who will manage the new field, their decision could decide the fate of the local team.
Jesus Olivares - Assistant City Manager
"Ventura Sports has an interest in bringing a team to Laredo. They are also project managers that could very easily have a contract with the City to manage the contract and the building of the stadium."
Ventura Sports wants to bring a new baseball stadium to Laredo.
It's a plan, which looked good on paper and proved to be even better as City leaders visited another Ventura Park; Quick Trip park in Grand Prairie near Dallas.
Bringing home what they saw, officials are impressed even if the plan includes a new team.
This is something which really upsets the general manager for the Laredo Broncos, Jose Melendez.
Jose Melendez - General Manager, Laredo Broncos
"I've been working 20 hours a day and to hear another group wants to come in with a new baseball team..."
No final decision has been made and under the plan the Broncos don't have to completely go away.
"That could be an independent team that comes in separately or it could be the team we have now, the Broncos. But these are all things that need to be negotiated."
"I don’t know why we're being punished for playing here for four years. If we had a new stadium from the beginning and we weren't drawing, then there's a reason to get someone else in that can draw."
"So why aren't the Broncos selling out these seats here at Veterans Field? Well Melendez says it's because they're playing in a third generation field and families aren't finding the attractions and amenities they would usually find at a minor league baseball stadium."
"When you come out to a baseball game this day and age at a minor league baseball stadium, people come for the atmosphere. Very rarely do wins and losses matter at a minor league baseball stadium. It's how much fun you're having at the game."
And Broncos fans don’t want to see their team go.
Lucero Martinez - Broncos Fan
"I would prefer to see the Broncos play at that new stadium because it's a really fun and exciting experience and I enjoy coming to the games a lot and having fun with the crowd."
The Broncos have been here in Laredo for four years.
Ultimately it will be the mayor and council who decide whether the team stays or goes.

Look at all of that Laredo talent just shine for the Broncos,13-14 losses in a row.Must be just like the good old days when they were in high school in Laredo, getting beat by whoever they played from out of town.

people get out of your caves and vote. the baseball field was on a ballot to vote on and it won by a overwelming 60% to 40% votes so that makes majority of the town in flavor.

Maybe if you had taken a look at the back of the November Ballot...

As far as "voting for it" i never seen it on any public ballot. So LEE if you want a base ball park YOU PAY FOR ONE or the broncos (who can't win a game to feed them selves) should pay for it themselves. Laredo DOES NOT NEED that, it is a waste of time, money and effort.

TO LEE: if the broncos want a new field LET THEM PAY FOR IT. i don't want my tax dollars wasted on something that is totally useless and pointless!!!!!!!!!

Folks now's your chance if you want a waterpark go to the council meeting this Monday here's the agenda item: 2. Status report with possible action on a water park request for proposals for the development of a water park in the Laredo Entertainment Center area., I guess that now they realized that people want that too. I find it odd that back then they didn't approve when Ramirez proposed it.

When did the taxpayers vote that they didnt invite me or anyone I know.... A BASEBALL STADIUM? Why not a Water Park... That would bring MONEY to Laredo.. Not everyone likes baseball... BUT like always just spending our money in stuff we DO NOT need... Make the whole Laredo vote and youll see the results... People from Mexico aint gonna say "Ohh lets go to laredo they have a Baseball stadium"... Who do we need to talk to so that we can change this... Por eso laredo no progresa...

By the way the new team that the company plans to bring would be an independent team.

"a sorted few that think they deserve a sports stadium or water park," that's what you wrote Outsider. If the County builds the racino it should bring some revenue and maybe they can use that to build the waterpark

The voters have spoken, "A New Baseball Stadium Approved by Voters". Outsider is just "amargado", take a chill pill! A far as the Broncos are concern, they should STAY! The have worked very hard to get a new baseball field, and they deserve ONE!

As well, it's not the cities responcibility to build sports venues, nor is it thier repsoncibility to build a water park, golf course or any other for profit setting. Laredo is barely keeping its head above water as it is, why spend money on something that is not a necessity. Cover the basics. Let someone else cover the luxuries. People can live with-out a ball field or water park they can not live with-out water, food, shelter.

If given the choice between a baseball park or water park i'd choose the water park. but there are better things to spend the money on such as a new jail for the city, fix some of the roads that have huge chunks tore out of them, invest in cheaper housing for the citizens. Laredo needs to stop the bs about extras and concentrate on what's actually needed. And to Unitedlong Horn, the few i refered to were those who want the ball feild, if the baseball team wants a new field have them pay for it.

I think Laredo is lost. It wants to be a Mexican city but wants the US to fund it.

We need a waterpark not a new baseball field WE ALL READY HAVE ONE
27011069UnitedLonghorn said on Wednesday, Jul 29 at 2:53 PM
I think that "few" you refer to Outsider is an overwhelming majority that wants a waterpark, and you know it's needed, have a better idea why not post it? I want a Baseball Park and I don't think they can reverse their decision to build it, but maybe soon they can have the waterpark.
27009839Outsider said on Wednesday, Jul 29 at 2:49 PM
There are more important things that the money could be spent on other than Sports feilds or water parks. With the economy the way it is find ways better suited to spend money on that will help the entire population not just a sorted few that think they deserve a sports stadium or water park. The city is always complaining they don't have enough money but yet they have enough to waste on non essincial items.
