With that in mind, Pro 8 Sports continues our countdown to the kick off of high school football season... we're bringing you in depth looks at each of the schools in Laredo. Today we get up close and personal with the Cigarroa Toros. The 2008 Cigarroa Toros looked poised for a break out season but by year's end they were left wondering what could have been. Offensive coordinator, Sam Longoria says, “ as everyone knows Carloz Cruz went down, and then our backup qb went down and then our backup to the backup went down, so ultimately we went through four quarterbacks.” Coming into this year the Toros are also left with the task of replacing arguably the city's best defensive unit. "Were going to count on some young guys from the J.V., that's going be a competition, we've got some J.V. guys coming in and incoming sophomores that will compete for two slots,” Longoria says. Even though there are big shoes to fill, players understand the task that lies ahead. Anthony Guerra says, “we’re going to work hard, do everything we can to stop everyone, we're still going be called the wrecking crew. The offense should be able to draw upon last year's experiences to help put points on the board. Coach Longoria says, "we’re going to be a lot better offensively, just the fact that the kids know they are more familiar with the offense.” Senior leaders are ready to step in and lead this team to a playoff birth. Senior Wide Receiver Sergio Davila says, "we've been having meetings we've been working out real hard coming out at one o clock in the sun trying to get used to the sun and get used to football." "Now, going through the off season we have three of those qb's back, they know what they are doing so we get to open it up a little bit more, more formations more multiples but were still the same philosophy" Even though their district contains four teams ranked in the top twenty regionally, one with state title ambitions, the Toro’s are ready to do battle with anyone. "Were in a tough uphill battle, but you know, anything can happen on a Friday night, and everybody knows that." The Toro’s first regular season game will be on the road Thursday August 27th against the La Joya Coyotes.
