Angel on the Sidelines

By Ray Gomez

The LBJ Wolves 28-7 win over the Zapata Hawks was long-awaited. They'd been hungry for a victory since the school opened in 2005. The game was a shining example of team spirit as the players pulled together as a pack to show support for a teammate who was mourning the loss of his mother. On Deptember 3rd, 2009, Rigoberto Mata's mother lost her fight with cancer and was buried two days later. Just a few hours after attending his mother's funeral, Rigo suited up and prepared for the biggest game of his life. In his heart he knew it was a chance to pay tribute to his mom and finally say goodbye to her on the grid-on. Rigo was ferocious on defense, keeping the Zapata Hawks out of contention throughout the entire game. The Wolfpack linebacker poured his blood, sweat, and tears onto the field and emerged as the defensive player of the game. It was a breakthrough performance for the senior who fed off his teammate's support and the angel who cheered him on from beyond the sidelines. The lbj wolves did not give up their fight until they ended up victorious. Their winning spirit gave Rigo the strength he needed to carry on in the game.....he will now rely on his teammate's support as he faces his final year in high school without the presence of his number one fan.
