TAMIU Falls to UTPB 10-2

By KGNS News

UT-Permian Basin defeated Texas A&M International University 10-2 in Heartland Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Veterans Field. The result gives UTPB a 2-1 series win in the season-opening series for both teams.

UTPB got all of the offensive production it would need early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. Evan Gattis started things off for the Falcons with a solo home run over the left field wall in the first inning.

Chandler Good pushed the Falcon lead to 4-0 when he scored an unearned run on an RBI single by Chris Wagner in the top of the third inning.

UTPB benefited from a dominating performance by starting pitcher Felix Cardenas, who earned the win after allowing no runs on one hit with 11 strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Four Falcon pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts for the game.

Jason Bonugli took the loss for the Dustdevils. He allowed four runs (two earned) on two hits in 2.0 innings of work. It was his first start since his sophomore season in 2008.

UTPB led 10-0 before Ray Alvarez beat out an infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing Jacob Hernández to score from third base. An overthrow at first by the UTPB third baseman also allowed Luís Bracero to score from third base on that play.

TAMIU returns to action this weekend for another Heartland Conference home series against Oklahoma Panhandle State. The Dustdevils will play doubleheaders against the Aggies on Saturday and Sunday at Dustdevil Field on campus.
