By KGNS News

Texas A&M International University freshman Marina Vásquez has been named Heartland Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week for games played Mar. 15-21. She shares the honor with St. Edward's sophomore Paige Sandahl.

Vásquez won both of her starts for the week, helping lead TAMIU to a 5-2 Spring Break record. Overall, she went 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA in four appearances and 13.2 innings pitched. Vásquez also contributed at the plate, going 5-for-8 (.625 avg.) with two RBI and a run scored.

In her first start of the Vásquez pitched a complete game, five-inning shutout against 16th ranked West Texas A&M. She limited the Lady Buffs to five hits with four strikeouts and three walks in an 8-0 Dustdevil win.

Vásquez then started and earned a win over UT-Permian Basin with another complete game effort. She allowed one earned run on six hits in 7.0 innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Besides earning the win, Vásquez had the game-winning hit against the Lady Falcons. Her two-RBI single in the top of the sixth pushed TAMIU to a 4-2 lead in a game that would end with that score.
