The Texas A&M International University softball team came up clutch in both games of doubleheader against St. Edwards University on Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil Field.
TAMIU used a big two run double in the bottom of the fifth inning in game one by Samantha Carrillo to tie the game up after giving up two runs in the top half of the inning. Marina Vasquez though would come up with another huge at bat in the inning though as she singled home Carrillo to give the Dustdevils the lead they were looking for. Vasquez would go one for three from the plate in the game but a solid single would be all that pitcher Victoria Beltran would need to hold on for her eighth win of the year and a big win three to two that gave the Dustdevils first place in the Heartland Conference.
TAMIU would see another pitcher's duel set up for game two on the afternoon with freshman phenom Kyndall Reaves going to the circle to pitch against Paige Sandahl. The two would battle all the way to the end of this one with Kyndall getting her eighth win of the year as well thanks in big part to the bat of Marina Vasquez. Vasquez would come off the bench in the sixth inning to single in pinch runner Esmerelda Gonzalez. Reaves went all seven innings giving up only two earned runs while striking out six in the effort. TAMIU wins four to three.
With the two wins on Saturday the Dustdevils have taken over sole possession of first place in the Heartland Conference with a perfect 8-0 record. TAMIU also moved to 21-23 overall.
Notes: Senior Samantha Garcia hit her Heartland Conference leading 10th homerun of season in game two.
Game three of the series between the Dustdevils and the Hilltoppers will take place on Sunday morning with first pitch scheduled for 11am.
