Siblings of slain baby hadn't been to school in years

By Ray Gomez

Tonight we learn the siblings of Katherine Cardenas have been taken away from their parents and placed in foster care.

We also learn that those children have not been attending school and have none of their required immunizations.

Child Protective Services has reportedly removed the siblings of Katherine Cardenas, the young girl found dead over the weekend, to foster homes.

Silvia Bruni - Exec. Director, Child Advocacy Center
"The 3 eldest are with one family and the 3 younger ones are with another family. We've already seen them here."

Authorities at the child advocacy center have already interviewed the oldest boys, who range in age from six through nine.
One of the caretakers did not tell the center that her 3 children had not been going to school nor did they have their required immunizations.
Child neglect, as seen in this case, usually has clear signs.

"You’re going to see a child whose demeanor changes, whose appearance changes, whose behavior changes. Neglect is obvious. They're not clothed, they're hungry, and they’re sleepy. I think those are things much more obvious to an observer."

Sexual abuse, however, is much harder to see, and unfortunately those cases are seen here.

"80% of what we see here is sexual and its being done against the children most defenseless. 75%-85% of our children are under the age of 12."

"Allot of times these crimes are preventable if only someone on the outside would lend a voice to these helpless victims."

"Do something about it. Don’t just worry or talk to your neighbor. Do something about it. The law is very explicit. You don’t have to be convinced, you don’t have to be certain, and as long as you have a suspicion that a child is being hurt then you have an obligation."

Reports from the Children’s Advocacy Center show there were 23 outcries in the month of June last year.

This year the center saw their largest number of outcries in history for one month with 84 outcries in June.

Executive director for the center Silvia Bruni believes the number went up significantly because people now know where to go and are more aware of the signs.
