A strong message sent in the 406th District Court. That’s what Judge Oscar Hale believes after the jury sentence of Christina Garza. Garza was found guilty of the intoxicated manslaughter of derick trevino. The 18-year old was delivering pizzas when he was killed as a result of the drunk driver. With no prior record Garzas defense attorneys pushed for probation. But, that was not the outcome. The jury sentenced Garza to 18 years in prison. Hale admits 18 years is the longest sentence hes heard of in such a case. But, he adds that Webb County jurors have proven in the past to come down hard on drunk drivers, even for first time offenders. With no chance at probation Garza could be 48-years old when her sentence is complete. Hale gave Garza the opportunity to address the court. She said with much media coverage on her trial, she said she hopes the public hears the message of this trial, so no other lives will be lost.
