Police led on a wild goose chase through South Laredo

By Ray Gomez

Police are still unclear as to what exactly happened in a bizarre incident Tuesday night that led several officers on a wild goose chase through South Laredo.

It happened around seven o'clock this evening when a call came in as a robbery at the HEB downtown.

Responding officers were able to locate the vehicle that fit the description given by the store clerk.

As officers attempted to pull the car over, the driver refused to stop. A chase ensued with the suspect, who had his wife and daughter in the vehicle.

The chase ended in south Laredo near United South High School when 26-year-old Jose Manuel Contreras abandoned his vehicle with his family still inside and began running on foot.

One of the officer's did fire his weapon, but missed Contreras.

He was arrested and charged with evading arrest with a motor vehicle, robbery, and endangering a child.

Why the officer fired his weapon is under investigation.

No one was hurt in this incident.
