November declared National Diabetes Awareness month

By Ray Gomez

Mayor Raul Salinas and county judge Danny Valdez proclaimed the month of November as National Diabetes Awareness month.
Currently seven percent of the population in the United States lives with diabetes.
In Laredo 19 percent of the population suffer from diabetes.
That is three times the national average.
Officials say some people are not aware of the disease and some just don't want to go to the doctor in fear of diet change.
"Diabetes is also known as a silent killer, because it kills more people that AIDS and breast cancer combined every year." Evelyn Garcia with the American Diabetes Association told Pro 8 News.
November thirteen local officials will host a fundraiser to fund diabetes research, advocacy and community research.
