The U.S. Consulate in Monterrey is urging travelers to not use the highway between Nuevo Laredo and Monterey.
The warning is for all forms of ground transportation including private cars and commercial busses.
In the warning the consulate cited "a deterioration of the security situation of the border region," citing the gun battles and grenade attacks at the police station in Nuevo Laredo.
The consulate has also halted non-essential travel for government employees.
The warning also applies to the highway between Reynosa and Monterrey.
For those that must travel the consulate says morning and early afternoon travel is the safest option.
