Laredo has two new powerlifting state champs as several local boys earned the right to compete in the state championship Saturday. Alexander's Jerry Alaniz, pictured on the left hand side, won first place in the 132-pound weight class to take home the state title. Alaniz's squat threw him over the competition, squatting 520 pounds. That also earned him the best squat in the lightweight division. Next to him is United South's David Lopez who also won the state title in the 148-pound weight class. Lopez lifted the most weight in the bench press, benching 325 pounds and also listed a total of 1265 pounds. Teammate Cesar Alforo, pictured on the right competed in the same weight class and won third place. A total of seven Laredo boys competed in the state competition.
