Good evening everyone I’m Ann Hutyra. According to a local veterans organization plots for veterans at the City Cemetery are filling up. There are enough plots for now, but 5 to 6 years down the road getting a plot could become difficult. James Johnson joins with more on this story, James.
I visited veteran organization American Legion Post 59 to talk to some veterans about the current situation at the city cemetery. They feel it's not as much of an issue now, but will be for the younger generations.
01:50:45:29 "there will be an issue down the road to obtain land for the cemetery 01:51:29:15 "as far as being a major concern not now, but it will get to that.
The city cemetery where the veterans are buried is slowing filling up and when it comes to running out of plots this may not be an issue now, but will be down the road. American Legion Post 59 is in the process of working with the city to obtain more land; right now the cemetery has about 900 plots available.

There are currently about 10,000 veterans living in Laredo and according to American Legion member, Jerry Garcia, there are enough plots for about 5 to 6 years but the people this will affect the most are the younger generation vets.
[cg:newsuper\jerry garcia\american legion post 59] 01:55:42:21 "obviously it's not going to be a problem for us, but it will be a problem for the younger kids. Desert storm, Iraq, Afghanistan, their veterans either way you look at it.
The American Legion is one of the largest veteran organizations in the United States. Today membership stands at over 2.4 million in 14,000 posts worldwide. The post are organized into 55 departments; one to represent each of the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.
[cg:newsuper\cesar montemayor\american legion post 59] 01:54:13:04 "the veterans are very organized and very united, the more the merrier. That way we have more of a voice when we do apply for things like the cemetery.
The American Legion post 59 is a great bunch of guys and they really want to stress that the younger generation vets look into some of these issues. For KGNS, I'm James Johnson.
