Galvan Responds to Police Chief Kidnapping
San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and Nuevo Laredo Mayor Benjamin Galvan Gomez both chosen as Sr. Internacional Saturday night, for being role models in the Latino community.
From the U.S., Castro is in Laredo, after now being known as the first Hispanic to deliver the key note speech at the Democratic National Convention that ultimately led to the renomination of President Obama.
“It’s wonderful to be here in Laredo. It’s a growing community playing a more prominent role in the future of Texas, and its always great to be here,” said Castro.
From Mexico, Mayor Galvan spoke with a positive outlook as problems of a drug war continue to plague his city.
“This is a grand celebration. On the day of the Abrazo, it does not signify that problems do not exist, but that as problems come about and things get complicated together we can prosper,” said Galvan.
An issue that could not be far from his mind, the recent kidnapping of Nuevo Laredos Director of Public Defense Roberto Balmori Garza.
That’s after two of his brothers were found dead in the trunk of a car in the neighboring state of Nuevo Leon.
Both men had been tortured, then shot to death.
Police can't say for sure if Balmori's disappearance is related to the death of his brothers, but say it's a possibility.
We asked Galvan if theres any word as to why the Balmori could be a target.
“As city officials we are not investigatros . We are the President Municipality of Nuevo Laredo, and all we can do is wait for authorities to give us any information that results from their investigation.”
“Up until now we have not received any information,” the Mayor stressed.
As of now the investigation as to what happened to Nuevo Laredo's Director of Public Defense remains ongoing.
