Javier Reyes Investigated After Allegations of Sexual Misconduct
A week after an Alexander schoolteacher is arrested in Williamson County for sexual assault; KGNS has found new details that involve students from right here at UISD.
Our Valerie Bragg has been investigating the story for months.
KGNS found several female basketball players who made allegations about Javier Reyes back in March right here in Laredo and it doesn't stop there.
We sorted through many statements from players of the Alexander girl’s basketball team regarding their former coach Javier Reyes. Here are some of their statements:
"I don't like the fact he keeps touching my leg anymore because he does it constantly."
"He asked to see my belly button."
He showed one girl a picture of a past track runner and said, "I need to get my ass and legs to look like hers."
Another girl claims she fell asleep watching film, and Reyes rubbed her lips.
Others have commented on how inappropriately he speaks to them:
“Are you having sex?” and "Sex is like a drug, once you have it, you are addicted."
These allegations are part of an investigation created by UISD after they received an anonymous letter.
"I'm not allowed to disclose any specific details, based on what you’re sharing with me. All I can say is whenever allegations surface, our job and our duty is to investigate and to determine if there is any validity to the allegations that are coming forward because like everything else, the complainant as well as the person that is being complained about, they both have rights and our job as administers are to investigate."
During their investigation, there were allegations of Reyes trying to influence others by telling them to deny everything.
After parents complained that Reyes was contacting students, the principal sent him a letter informing him, "failure to follow these directives may result in adverse action towards your continued employment as the Head Girls Basketball Coach." Reyes stepped down from his coaching position but still remains a teacher in the school.
"(Reporter): I mean how you think they had to feel, walking down the hallway and seeing this guy that they know, he knows they made allegations about?’ (Garcia): I can't place myself in the students mind as to what they feel or what they think. Like every other child, we are responsible to every single parent that we are going to take the appropriate action whenever concerns surface. At this point, all I can say is when concerns surface, the district has the obligation to investigate to take the appropriate action. Beyond that, ma'am, I am not able to disclose any other details."
We've learned that the school district knew about Javier Reyes' past at other school districts before he was hired as a teacher.
I was able to get a hold of a document in Reyes' file by a police investigator looking into his past.
This document states that the investigator found three female students from Roma that made allegations of inappropriate conduct.
KGNS kept searching through even more documents and found multiple allegations.
One girl claimed he called her, 'his baby doll……and you are gods gift to heaven for me."
She goes on to say Reyes would always compliment her legs and that he wished his wife were as beautiful.
Another girl claims he offered to pierce her belly button and if she kept dressing like that, she'll lose her virginity.
Parents of a female student filed a complaint at the Zapata sheriff's department, for inappropriate touching, as well.
There were other reports of assault and assault with a motor vehicle that have also been filed, but in all of these cases, Reyes has not been arrested or convicted for any of these allegations.
"A charge or arrest or indictment does not necessarily prove guilt. In that regard, the district looks at every applicant that applies to the school district when we check reference check and we check individual’s background. We look at every element, every concern that is there regardless of the individual and of course we take those into consideration.”
Reyes is still on paid administrative leave.
