Johnny Canales Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

He began his show right here in this studio at KGNS TV in the 1980's.
And in the years following he was credited with jump-starting the careers of many artists.
Over the weekend Johnny Canales received a big award.
Our Annette Garcia was at the Tejano Music Awards in San Antonio for the announcement.
Awarded for a lifetime of contributions to the Tejano music industry Johnny Canales, internationally known for showcasing the biggest acts before they were famous got his own recognition at this years' Tejano Music Swards in San Antonio.
“It feels great coming from Laredo and I know the reason we got the achievement award is because of all of you fans out there the viewers and also all the groups that have taken part.”
And there have been many like Selena, Emilio and Elsa Garcia who called his stage home.
“He helped us out he’s the one that put us on his show. When we had our first 45, a 45 guys I’m dating myself but yeah Johnny gave us our big shot.”
Canales' TV career began in Laredo inside the KGNS studio, where he launched 'El Show de Johnny Canales' inviting countless musicians in a span of over 20 years.
Health issues forced him to pause the show but he’s back and ready to make another round of Tejano artists stars.
“I love the way the people ask for autographs pictures and the artists that come and say Johnny ‘ya era tiempo.’ I’m glad that you’re back cause we need you.”
“I’m so proud of him for getting the lifetime achievement award. Proud of you Johnny.”
“We love the music and it lives on.”
Other receiving lifetime achievement awards were Elsa Garcia and Mingo Saldivar.
It's been ten years since the Tejano Music Awards was held in San Antonio's Alamodome.
