Laredo Motor Inn Fire Ruled Arson

By KGNS News

There are new developments in a fire that killed two people last year.
Investigators say their findings could get someone arrested.
Laredo Fire Department Investigators say the fire that took the lives of a grandmother and her grandson was intentionally set.
“This fire has been classified as an arson.”
The fire happened at the Laredo Motor Inn on Saunders exactly one year ago this month, killing 41-year-old Simona Garcia and her 5-year-old grandson Joel Llanes.
Fire officials remember that September morning as a challenging one.
High winds and very dry conditions fueled the blaze, spreading it quickly.
“By the time the units were rolling out of the bay door they could see the orange glow on the horizon.”
It took months to sift through all of the evidence.
Even after the building was torn down, the investigation continued.
“They had to go quite literally through every square inch of that property gathering clues.”
All that’s left now is to hold someone accountable.
“Right now it’s an ongoing process to try to identify the person responsible for the arson and bring him to justice.”
Investigators are looking for any information that could help them make an arrest in the case. Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. If you have any details you’d like to share with authorities please call 795-2800 or 727-tips.
