Laredo is adopting a new recycling program in order to help extend the life span of Laredo’s landfills while helping to keep Laredo green. James Johnson has more James. It’s been a long time coming... Laredo is going green and is asking the community to help out. Laredo’s recycling program has been in the works for a couple of years now. The blue bins you see on the side of the road are part of an effort to get the community to go green. Like the trash bins...these bins are blue and will be used to put your recyclables inside. The blue bin pilot program started in the heights and because it expanded to a 10 million dollar investment into Laredo’s current recycling program.
[cg:newsuper\alex perez jr.\city council member district iii] 18:28:03:06 were getting all new equipment for our recycling program, new trucks.... were going green.
[cg:newsuper\james johnson\kgns reporter] 18:48:47:16 before these bins were adapted people used bags and hopefully with these bins will make the process a little easier.
The blue bin program will take affect this month, so you can expect to see more of these bins popping up across Laredo. Along with the blue bins the city is also working on the plastic bag ordinance both programs according to council member Alex Perez will take Laredo into the future.
[cg:newsuper\alex perez jr.\city council member district iii] 18:31:50:18 we use 120 million bags in Laredo, those bags get in trees, in our river...this is a big deal
The plastic bag ordinance is still in the works but should be all said and done by Monday after the final reading by the city. The ordinance once passed wont take affect right away gives time to educate the community.
The city of Laredo plans to hand out 60,000 reusable bags once the ordinance goes through to help out the community. The ordinance will take effect Jan 15 2015. For KGNS, I'm James Johnson.
