Its a group of Laredo ladies who beleive with God by their side they can help spread health, and maybe even feed the hungry. That is one seed at a time.
They’re planting their seeds and hoping their faith will take them far. The Jardines de Maria are working on a first garden and believe its the first of many to come.
“Nosotros nos posimos jardines de maria..(We call ourselves the Jardines the Maria because God and the blessed virgin Mary are going to give us lots of vegetables) Dios nos va ha dar mucho verdura para compartir con los de mas.” (Teresa Sauceda, Jardines de Maria)
The group initially a prayer group have together prayed the rosary for the past 18 years. Today is no different as they hope for chiles, eggplants, cabbages and much more.
“We've never been good at gardening..but we hope we are counting on gods blessings and the blessed mother to help us do this and we feel confident.” (Magdalena Flores Alexander, Jardines de Maria)
The inspiration they say came from the powers above and an environmentalist pushing for more community gardens throughout the city.
“When you have a community project it provides friendship and socializing and social benefits.” (Tricia Cortez, Rio Grande International Study)
Other benefits include a healthier life style, but it wasn’t themselves they were thinking of when they began to garden.
“Ohala muchas familias su unen (we hope more families will unite like we did..make a garden..be healthy and take care of each other).” (Sauceda)
The Jardines the Maria are praying many gardens will bloom producing fresh vegetables so they can share with others, the less fortunate, or anyone in need.
“We have big plans were thinking big haha.”
Well its the Rio Grande International Study who is helping the Jardines to learn to garden. If you need help to build your own community garden you can contact them at 718-1063.
