Local School District Hopes for Increase in Funding

Local school districts could possibly see an increase in state funding.
A decision made by an Austin judge last week rules that the Texas public school funding system is unconstitutional.
"We think we are suppose to be equitable. The schools in the south should be a separable proper amount of money with schools in the north, schools in the west."
Laredo Independent School District said they've been fighting with this system for years because many of their students are at an economic disadvantage.
But the ruling isn't going to help our schools yet; it's still going to be a long road ahead before a final decision is made.
The state is expected to file an appeal on the ruling.
"Right now we are kind of in a wait and see mode. Yes, we know that a judge in Austin ruled that the way Texas public schools are funded is unfair and unequal. That affects us a whole lot at LISD."
LISD school board members said they hope a final ruling is reached this summer and say the district could really use the money.
"To get better pay for our teachers, to get more supplies, agendas that are needed in academics. And of course support the athletics, the arts just as well."
