The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all babies are breastfed for at least the first 6 months of life. We talk to a local doctor about the benefits, and about when a baby should be formula fed. "Breastfeeding is going to create some bonding with you and your child that is going to be eternal." Doctor Eduardo Robles says both the baby and mother benefit from breastfeeding. Breast milk is proven to not only provide all the nutrients a baby needs to grow strong, it also helps protect the baby against illness and some evidence shows it helps prevent allergies. "It's going to be helping you in trying to lose weight, it's going to give a lot of immunity for the baby, it's something that is going to be cherished for the rest of your life." Even though he recommends all women give it a try, he says there are some circumstances that may prevent a mother from breastfeeding, and in those instances formula is the way to go. "If a person for example has active tuberculosis, if a person has HIV, if a person has some medical condition that forbids them from breastfeeding, those are the things that we're going to be discussing with the OBGYN at the time." And he says while some women may be intimidated by the thought, it takes practice from both mom and baby to master the art of breastfeeding. "The most important thing about breast milk and breastfeeding is having to latch the baby on a constant, on a regular basis, and the latching of the baby is what's going to help produce the milk on a regular basis." He says moms who deliver at LMC have the added benefit of help from a lactation consultant, who can teach a new mom everything she needs to know. "How to breastfeed, when to breastfeed, how to do it, and you can go ahead and get those services that day that the person delivers, and that's a good tool that we have now-a-days." And the best advice he can give is to not give up. "Stick to it" "Every woman should try to achieve and try to breastfeed her own child."
