Medical Update: What to expect in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy

By KGNS News

This week, Dr. Robles tells us all we need to know about the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy.
"We're going to be doing a sonogram. That is the one I want to see between 20, 22nd weeks, which is the sonogram that tells me how the baby is forming and developing, and that's to me, that's the most important sonogram of all that we do."
In the 2nd trimester of pregnancy, Dr. Robles says the symptoms of nausea and vomiting tend to go away for most women, and the focus turns to the development of the baby.
He says this is the time for testing for any genetic defects, and a time when many couples learn the sex of their baby.
"Now a days we have several tools that can tell us the sex of the baby, like blood work that can be done as early as 10 weeks."
Dr. Robles says during the second trimester new symptoms may pop up in the mother to be.
"We can have some mood swings around the area of the 2nd and 3rd trimester as well that is associated to the hormones or the imbalance of hormones that the patient can have during the pregnancy."
Back pain is also an issue for a lot of women, and Dr. Robles say he keeps an eye out for high blood pressure and diabetes in the mother.
He says he also begins the discussion with the mom-to-be on what type of delivery she wants to have.
"It has to do with information, it has to do with what the patient wants from the body and we provide the information and the patient makes the decision what type of delivery they would want to have with their physician."
He says he recommends the 'Tiny Toes' program at LMC because it helps educate women on what to expect the day of delivery, through hospital tours and informational classes.
"If the patient knows, and the information is being provided to them, they feel a more sense of secure in knowing what they're going to be able to go through."
"The second and third trimester are going to be, they're going to go by so fast that moms are going to be excited every time they get closer to that due date."
Our series on a healthy birth, healthy baby, healthy mom continues next week when we take a closer look at breastfeeding versus baby formula.
