Jim Hogg County opened it's brand new state of the art county jail this morning.
Our Lauren Kendrick was there and joins us now.
The common theme of this new jail is safety.
From state of the art security technology to more space, it seems everything was thought of.
Here's what the sheriff had to say about his vision being brought to a reality.
"People say well it's for the inmates. They didn't do right. They're in there because they did something wrong."
The Sheriff of Jim Hogg County says he's heard mixed feelings when it comes to the new jail.
But Alarcon assures people they wouldn't want to switch spots with the people who are incarcerated.
"Your freedom. Is that what you want? You're still deprived of your freedom regardless of a new facility or not."
Like it or not, the new state of the art county jail is over 20,000 square feet with 48 beds, nearly three times as large as the old jail. The cells boast their own shower, toilet, bunk beds, tables and even a phone.
"At the old jail we we just had a lot of problems with plumbing and air conditioning."
The Sheriff of Jim Hogg county had the idea to open a facility like this since he first came into office nine years ago. Today that becomes a reality as Hebronville officially opens the doors to the state of the art county jail.
"It keeps log of everything. What time our doors open. everything's logged down. Everything's by computer."
Alarcon says this jail is by far different than the last because it was designed with the officer's safety in mind.
In the control room, it's easy to see every safety detail was thought of. From security cameras in every hallway to the system that shows when a door is opened.
Someone who had an intricate part in this jail being built is congressman Henry Cuellar.
Cuellar says people in Hebronville should feel a lot safer.
"With this new facility they can sleep better because deputies can focus on the job of patrolling the area. If they have to bring somebody here whether it's state or federal, they'll feel safe that they're not going to be breaking out."
The sheriff tells me they expect to have as many as eleven inmates moved into the new jail as of this afternoon.
