New at Noon: Councilman Charlie San Miguel Announcement

By KGNS News

Lots of anticipation today as we first reported last Friday that an announcement would be made by City of Laredo Councilman Charlie San Miguel. Now, we know what that announcement is.

"So, today, I will not resign", says Councilman Charlie San Miguel. This after members of the local watchdog group, Voices in Democratic Action, have called for his resignation. On numerous occasions, Hector Farias has cited unethical violations by Councilman San Miguel. VIDA Chairman has said: "I think they'll do the right thing, because they've come around 360 degrees since we've been there. Some of them are up for re-election they have to do something."

Most recently, Councilman San Miguel has been questioned by the Laredo Police Department for taking money home with him after the recently held Mud Run in which more than $24,000 were raised. A city employee was suspended for 3 days for his part in the breach of policy. KGNS spoke with Councilman San Miguel shortly after the race: "But after the audit was conducted, and it was an independent audit, and the Finance Department came in and looked at it all very, very closely, it was all there. I wouldn't be happy about it, because I know that he does an excellent job [regarding the 3-day suspension given to the Parks & Leisure Director]. You had to have been there to see exactly how overwhelming this event was to appreciate it.".

Since then, however, other city council members have come forth and placed items on tonight's (Monday) city council agenda asking council and or administration to take a closer look into the mishandling of the cash at the Mud Run. One of those members is Councilwoman Cindy Liendo-Espinoza. She clarifies, "we just want to make sure that we're being transparent, and that the public knows that this is not the proper procedure, and that we will be sure this does not happen again. We just want to make sure that everything is out there and open for everyone to know."

Tonight at Pro8News at 5PM, we will tell you why Charlie San Miguel made the decision to not step down and what encouraged him to continue serving District VI.
