Dozens upon dozens of homeowners in North Laredo who were told they didn't need flood insurance are hoping they had ignored that advice.
Last night, there was virtually nothing they could do to keep the water out of their homes.
Tonight, we visit with several of those home owners.
Our Lauren Kendrick kicks off our team coverage and our top story.
"It wasn't until my truck alarm started going off that we actually looked outside and realized how high the water was."
Tony Elizondo, homeowner in Shiloh Crossing, said the water was waist deep when he went outside to turn his alarm off. He noticed a pvc pipe blocking the drain and removed it which help the water recede a bit. Elizondo says since it doesn't rain much in Laredo, he and his neighbors are shocked at the amount of damage, especially since they live in a more elevated area.
Homeowners living in a non flood zone never expected to be cleaning up a mess like this, but that's exactly what they're doing.
"I would like somebody to step forward and say why it occurred. it's not supposed to happen."
Elizondo says his home is just a year old. When they were looking at the neighborhood, they were shown homes in flood zones.
"Like everyone else, we moved away from that area. If yo go to the properties that were a flood zone, they didn't get any water and that's why we're shocked."
It's not just the water seeping into homes that neighbors are concerned about. Many fences were knocked down by the surging water leaving many pets roaming the neighborhood. Elizondo just wants answers. We did see people from the city of Laredo in the neighborhood, but they would not talk to us. We were able to speak to someone with Armadillo homes who says he blames the debris blocking the drain.
"It's to keep debris from going into the system and I think that's what caused it because of so much water."
That's why Armadillo division president Rick Ramirez, said they wanted to help.
"We had all the carpets being picked up. We tried to help as much as we can. Whatever the insurance company can't do, we're going to be there for them."
More than a dozen homes in the Shiloh Crossing neighborhood have water damage.
City Councilman Charlie San Miguel says he visited five areas today that were hit the hardest by the flood waters.
