Parent Talks About Head-Lice Incident

"There was a situation in which our nurses were doing some routine screenings and in the process of doing routine screenings if they do find something that's questionable, they do contact the parent."

A parent received a call from his child's school nurse providing him with information he wasn't expecting.
He was told his daughter was found to have lice in her hair.
After being shocked by the news, he questioned his daughter and learned one of the classes she is taking requires the sharing of headphones among students. He believes that's how his daughter caught the lice.

"They say don't share combs, don't share make up or whatever and here they are doing the contrary which is having everybody use the same headphones."

His concern grew even more when he contacted the City of Laredo Health Department and was told some troubling information.

"She did tell me that it's a bigger epidemic this year than other years and it's a real big concern for me."

He believes at least 5 more students in the same class have lice.
The school district says they have only seen one case of lice but say action is being taken regardless.

"In this situation what the district is doing is providing the classroom with some wipes so that way the equipment that they are using, whether it be headphones or any other sort or type of equipment, can be cleaned before another student uses it."

The district is also providing parents with free lice treatment shampoo at the nurse's office for those parents who request it.
