While you are out celebrating the new year, there's a group of people making sure everyone in Laredo are safe, the 911 operators. Unfortunately, they are expecting a high volume of calls which could lead to a back up.
"Anytime after 10pm that's when a lot of the calls begin to get backed up and the officers are just going call to call."
Baeza says that's when the craziness begins.
"It's not that we can't handle the call load, it's just the fact that everybody decides to call at the exact same time."
That's why the police department is asking people to use discretion when placing a call to 911.
"We're asking people that if it's not an actual life or death emergency to leave the 911 lines open for the actual life or death emergencies."
Baeza says people tend to call 911 to report loud music, fireworks, or people blocking their driveways. That could potentially stop people who are in need of medical care from getting through.
"If it's not an emergency situation we're asking folks to please hold off until the next morning for daylight and then they can call and we'll be more than happy to attend to your service call."
