Police Chase Ends in Arrest

By KGNS News

A police chase ends in a vehicle crash in a south Laredo neighborhood Tuesday evening.

The chase ended on the corner of Texas and Cortez street when the driver of a SUV attempted to make a turn to avoid police, but crashed into a stop sign and then the driver fled on foot.

A neighbor observed the chase and said it’s the first of its kind she witnessed:

"I was outside saying goodbye to my granddaughter when I saw the speeding cars, the police, and border patrol and everything. I didn't know what was really happening. But then a few minutes, they came over here later through Texas and the guy hit the post right there on Cortez and Texas. And then he got off the truck and ran."

Police said no injuries were reported, but the foot chase had some residents worried:

"The guy ran and we didn't know where he was going. I told my husband go check in the back yard. They could jump the fence or something."

Police and Border Patrol agents caught the suspect and identified him as 20-year-old Jose Martin Martinez.

Martinez had two passengers with him who fled before the crash, and was later identified as illegal immigrants.

Martinez was charged with two counts of smuggling persons with monetary gain, one count of reckless driving as well as evading arrest with motor vehicle and evading on foot.

Both of the immigrants were caught and were turned over to border patrol.
