Proper Child Seat Installation
We all know how seat belts can increase the likelihood of an adult surviving an accident, but for children their safety seat plays an equally important role. This week, the Texas Department of Transportation educated parents on proper seat installation. Orlando Garza reports.
Car crashes are the number one killer of children 1-12 years of age in the United States. The best way to protect them in the car is to strap them in the right seat, at the right time, and use it the right way. Samantha Richards, a concerned parents, wants to make sure her children are kept safe. "I read that 7 out of 8 car seats are installed incorrectly; so, i just want to make sure mine worked."
Frank Luera, a car seat technician, says most parents think it's fairly easy to install a car seat, just pop it in and you're done. "Truthfully, there are any number of things that could be wrong with the installations, and that could be: the seat is not installed tightly enough, the harness is in the wrong place, [or] the seat itself maybe incorrect for that child's height/weight."
Most people think of food and other related items have expiration dates, little do they know, car seats have an expiration date on the side of the seat as well.
Technicians had their hands full today, but at least parents leave with a certain sense of comfort. "Safely installed in the car seats and their safely in the car."

The event coincides with National Child Passenger Safety Week and National Car Seat Check Day.
