The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is mandating Webb County to make some changes to the dam located at Lake Casa Blanca. Our Reporter Carolina Garcia visited the dam and spoke to county officials about those changes being required. She has more on the story.
Webb County officials are working on an issue brought to their attention in June of last year. They say improvements are being done in order to meet the expectations from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. This after an inspection made at the dam, which was built in 1946 revealed some damage. Webb County Interim Engineer Mike Cabello told our cameras, "Over the years some erosion has been damaging the dam so it's just a matter of going in there and preparing it. Some erosion, some gullies that have been forming and some vegetations that we need to get our from the dam."
County officials say after the TCEQ mandated the repairs to be done a plan of action was submitted to the commission.
"And they went ahead and approved that plan of action. so today we are working very hard to make sure that we meet the necessary requirements and mandated by the Texas commission on environmental quality.", said County Commissioner Rosaura "Wawi" Tijerina.
The repairing process started in late January and is expected to conclude some time in May. Several weeks are left in the repairing process for the dam here at Lake Casa Blanca but when it's done we'll have a better chance of keeping the water that runs into the lake from several creeks from flowing into the city in case of a flood. Meteorologists Richard Heatwave Berler says Laredo has recently seen the driest 14 month period in over a century. but county officials say it is crucial to have the dam ready as soon as possible. "It is very important that we finish this dam in order for us to make sure that our community is well protected in case of a flood or heavy rains.",said Tijerina. Carolina Garcia Pro8News.
