The nation has been glued to the heartbreaking news of the school shooting that took place last Friday.
We visited Lamar Bruni Elementary School today to hear what they do on a daily basis to prevent a tragedy from happening.
"As a parent of two children, I completely understand the anxieties that any parent would feel in this day and age."
Castillon assures the parents of children at LISD schools, they are safe.
"We have invested a lot of resources and time and money into making sure that our children and staff are safe and secure in our facilities."
She says by law school districts are required to conduct ten safety drills a year.
"That includes drills like evacuation drills in case of a fire reverse evacuation if the children aren't inside and they have to go back inside."
In addition to fire drills and other safety precautions, Castillon says the LISD police are prepared if anything like the Newtown massacre should occur.
"They trained this past august for intruders with guns so they've had very recent training on that."
Walking into the LISD campus, Lamar Bruni Elementary, it is easy to see the safety precautions including a metal detector and a security guard at the entrance.
"When visitors enter our campus we have also what we call the raptor system. they need to present an id and the id is passed on the the Texas Department of Transportation and it will show if that person trying to come onto our campus has a criminal record."
As the nation mourns the loss of innocent children, Castillon says she wants to tell the parents in Laredo they take pride in keeping their the young students out of harm.
"We want to assure the parents that when their children are here, they're safe and secure with us."
It is not clear yet what if any additional safety precautions will be taken.
Castillon says they implemented gates around the campuses in LISD after the Columbine shooting.
