The Better Business Bureau is warning Texas residents about a scam sweeping the country. The new scam suggests the federal government will pay your electric bill as part of a new program to help Americans with high utility costs.
The Better Business Bureau says scammers are showing up at homes calling or even texting their victims to convince them that the program will pay up to one thousand dollars in utility bills but only after the resident "registers" with the program.
Thousands of people across the country have reportedly given out social security numbers and other personal information thinking the program was real.
the BBB says the scam is popping up every where in Texas just as President Obama pays a visit to the lone star state this week.
To avoid falling for the scam you are asked to never give out personal information over the phone. It's best to hang up and call the utility company and ask about the program.
