Two Girls Going to States; Boys Prepare for Regional Meet

By KGNS News

The Powerlifters have been busy this weekend as the girls competed in the regional meet hoping for their chance at going to state.
Five Laredo girls competed in regionals in Weslaco: Nixon's Amber Almeida and Karina Davalos, United South's Kassandra Leal, Cigarroa's Olga Correas and Yesenia Carrera.
Yesenia Carrera won second in the 132-weight class.
Kassandra Leal won fifth in the 220 plus weight class. Those two ladies will be going to states to compete in two weeks.
(Kassandra Leal):"A lot of tough competition. The top five others, they are really tough to compete with, but I'll manage. Hopefully place over there and do awesome."
States for the girls will be held in two weeks.
On the boy’s side, they will compete in the regionals this weekend.
United South went undefeated in the regular season.
They will have six lifters competing: Jonathon Pena, Eric Oliva, Cesar Alfaro, David Lopez, Victor Ramos and Rudy Flores.
Coach Jerry Ramirez said it's an honor to take such a large group to regionals.
"You have to place in the top 10 with your totals throughout the powerlifting season and right now our district goes from Del Rio to San Antonio to Victoria to Brownsville so it's quite a few schools. So it's an honor to be taking such a big group."
Alexander will have Jerry Alaniz competing.
Martin's Mark Duron and Nixon's Marco Banda will be competing in the 220-weight class.
Cigarroa will have three competing: Edgar Barbosa, Jairo Morales and Jose Flores.
That meet will take place March 9th.
