UISD held an event today discussing the challenges of dyslexia and what services are available to help students facing dyslexia succeed. Region one presented a lecture on identifying the characteristics of dyslexia. Effective strategies for supporting dyslexic students at home were also discussed. Current and former students who have succeeded despite dyslexia shared their stories with the audience. Brenda Benavides, UISD 504/dyslexia coordinator said, “We have some simulations going on. The simulations are about parents getting involved and experiencing first hand what a dyslexic student goes through in their academic years." Organizers say the objective is to implement the strategies used in school at home to help students find success.
