U.S. 83 Head-On Crash Claims Man's Life

By KGNS News

A major crash on U.S. 83 leaves one man dead and shuts down a portion of the highway. We arrived on the scene shortly after it happened.

Very little is left behind of the two heavy duty trucks, following a head-on collision shortly before 7 AM Friday morning, on US 83, 10 miles north of the Camino Colombia toll road.

"It's very severe. It appears by the damage on their vehicles, that they were both traveling at the posted speed limit."

But that wasn't enough, to allow both drivers to react on time.

"The truck traveling south veered in to the northbound lane and hit the northbound pick up."

DPS Sergeant Tony Salas tells us the two men in the green F-250 were headed South to a scrap yard; several pieces of metal could be seen scattered across the roadway. The impact of the crash was so severe it sent the blue truck spinning off the roadway shattering the windshield and destroying the entire driver's side.

"We have one fatality on scene right now, and the two subjects in the south bound pick-up were taken to Doctor's hospital."

When emergency crews arrived they found the driver pinned behind his steering wheel.

"It was foggy at the time of the accident. It probably did have something to do with it but we're still investigating."

Authorities were forced to shut down a stretch of US 83 at the Colombia Road for several hours as troopers investigated the deadly crash.

We're told US 83 was re-opened to traffic around 10:30 Friday morning. The identity of the driver who died on the scene has not yet been released. Authorities tell us, the driver of the other vehicle suffered severe head injuries, his passenger is said to be in stable condition.
