Unemployment numbers show increase in Laredo

By KGNS News

The latest numbers out of Austin show the unemployment rate in Laredo has increased.

Despite Texas employers adding over 12,000 jobs in June, Laredo still took a hit.

The Texas Workforce Commission says the unemployment rate across Texas is down from a year ago and remains below the national average, but Laredo’s unemployment rate grew from 7% in May to 7.9% in June.

Laredo's mayor says the increase is concerning, but says Laredo is better off now than it was even a year ago when the unemployment rate was 9%.

Speaking from a conference out of town, he told us he's optimistic things would turn around.

Texas Workforce figures show Midland has the lowest unemployment rate in the state with just over 4%.

The Rio Grande Valley has the highest at 12%.
