United High School Band Headed To State U.I.L Competition

By KGNS News

A local high school makes history in a weekend competition. United HS, for the first time, has advanced to compete in the State Finals. Our cameras were there to catch the emotional reactions. Our Lauren Kendrick joins us with more.

"I'm not normally speechless, but fantastic job. Thank you for everything."

Few words came from the band director of United High School once they were told they would be heading to state. The winners were announced around 1:30 a.m Sunday after close to 8,000 band students performed in the U.I.L band competition. Of those, only eight advanced to state and United High School was one of them. "We need to go make history over there. First time for United to make it this far."

After a lot of hard work, United High School band members rejoice in knowing they're moving on. "It was surreal. Something we'd never done before and I knew we were going to get there." "I can't wait until next week so we can show the rest of Texas what we're made of. All the way from Laredo, TX. We did it."

Overcome with emotion, Carlos Elizondo, Jr. thanks his fellow band members for their hard work. "We did it. We did it. I'm so proud of y'all. Now it's time to go the next level."

United High School's band will compete at the state level on November 6, at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
