Just one hour before the board was set to vote on whether to continuing paying schoolteacher Jorge Valadez, school officials received a letter for Valadez' lawyer, resigning from his position at United South. "So today was his last official day, so he has resigned. Therefore, the agenda item we had today was moved." Valadez was an English teacher at United South High School. He spent roughly 24 years with the district before resigning Monday. A federal search warrant was issued on Valadez' home after Homeland Security Investigators and the Webb County Sheriffs office found a shared folder containing child pornography linked to Valadez computer. Authorities were able to locate Valadez through the IP address on his computer. Valadez admitted to authorities that he has downloaded child pornography an unknown number of times over the past five years. He has been suspended with pay from UISD. School officials said they couldn’t take pay away from an employee unless it is approved. "If it's a contract employee you cannot suspend them without pay. You can suspend them, but the only people that can suspend without pay on contract employees is the board of trustees. That's the reason we put it on the agenda item, to move forward to suspend without pay." Valadez was arrested and federally charged with child pornography charges.
