A local World War II veteran is having trouble getting the money that is owed to him each mont because of governmental red tape. His daughter is speaking out for him tonight, wondering why the U.S. would hold money from those that have fought for the freedoms of our country.
Erminia Molina has been taking care of her 90-year-old father for six years, struggling to make ends meet, and this entire time she claims the government is holding out on the veteran.
"I have pawned my jewelry to buy him medication and to pay some doctors' fees."
Molina says her father is supposed to receive over $3,400a month, but they are lucky if they see half that amount.
"He only gets 1,500. That's it, for more than 20 years."
Years ago she started looking into her father's finances and found that an attorney in San Antonio was responsible for distributing the V.A. funds to veterans in south Texas.
"It's not only my father. It's a lot of veterans out there that they're holding on their money. I got concerned that he was not taking care of my father's money, so I started writing letters to Houston."
She has attempted to speak to those in charge here and across the state but has not gotten word back from them.
"The V.A. here and the clinic don't want to respond. The San Antonio fiduciary does not respond and the V.A., doesn't respond."
She has even sent letters to lawmakers requesting they look into the matter, but so far the V.A. is standing by their man.
"They were not going to change the fiduciary because he is doing a good job, even though I have all this evidence and everything."
All she wants is to see is the money owed to her father and the other veterans make it into their hands.
"They say they're going to give this money to the family or parent or to the widow, but it's a lie."
Molina says she has yet to get a response from the Houston V.A.’s office on this matter. We tried contacting the local clinic as well as the attorney's office in San Antonio but neither was available for comment.
