Law enforcement is getting funds to better serve and protect residents of Laredo.
Congressman Henry Cuellar joined members of the Webb county sheriff and Laredo police departments to announce the more than 2-point one eight million dollars law enforcement is set to receive.
The police department says the money is going to be used to help their officers in many ways.
Gabriel Martinez, Deputy Chief LPD:
"With this money we are purchasing some weapons for our officers. Both rifles and non-lethal weapons. We are also going to use this money for training which is needed to comply with our state mandates and to better equip our officers not just with the weapons but the knowledge."
The police department receives the money from the Edward Byrne’s JAG program, while the sheriffs department gets additional grants courtesy of the COPS program and the Department of Homeland Security.
