Future Longhorns Excited about New Campus

By Cynthia Cano

The school year is right around the corner, and thousands of Laredo students are especially excited to go back this year. Today, U.I.S.D. officals opened the doors of the new United High to the public; showing off a campus many thought they'd never see in Laredo. Our Annette Garcia has the details.
" 'it's super big...i'm excited!,' (says a student). 'I've been walking around everywere and i'm still like wow!' (Annette:) Rarely does the beginning of another school year bring so much joy to teenagers anywhere. But, this year, students of United High School have something to look forward to. 'They're gonna be thrilled. As you can see, it looks like a mall. They're really gonna enjoy their education,' says a teacher. Former and future U.I.S.D. students listened in as district officials opened the school doors to the public; giving parents and their kids an opportunity to find their way around campus. 'It's big...really big...like in the movies big,' says one student. '(Annette:) The school, 5 years in the making, cost almost 53 million dollars. And, at over 400 thousand square feet, it sits on a whopping 60 acres of land.' 'I didn't think we'd have a school this big in laredo but its come true.' 'Nah-- maybe in college but not now.' Teachers are already hard at work, adding last minute touches to classrooms built to give students the extra elbow room many say was needed at their other campus. Brand new materials and amazingly open spaces have teachers even more excited themselves. 'I felt like I was in Disney World,' says one teacher. And, while students gear up for their first day of class, many say they know how they'll be feeling. 'Nervous...' says one student. 'I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get lost,' says another. But are happy to be the first ones sitting int he brand new desks. Annette Garcia, Pro 8 News."
