Tax free weekend kicks off in only a few hours and employees of Wal-Mart over on loop twenty say they've been rushing to prepare for what they hope to be a tidal wave of shoppers.
This year, new items added to the tax-free list may draw even more people.
“For at least three days, parents would not have to pay sales tax and in this economy. I think it will be important,” says State Representative Richard Raymond.
Even more important: the kind of items making the list.
While in years past ... school supplies were a no - no when it came to being tax-free.
Now the Texas legislatures say notebooks, scissors, highlighters and almost everything filling students desks make the grade for tax exemption.
“Shoppers know whether you have one child or three like we do it adds up.”
“It does add up for a single mom its kind of difficult.”
The sales tax holiday officially kicks off at midnight and associates of Wal-Mart say they're overstocked with merchandise.
“We have a couple of associates opening and a lot closing to prepare store for the customers.”
State officials estimate parents in Texas will save a combined 50-million dollars this weekend.
But not all may be willing to take advantage.
With tax free weekend starting here and classes starting only a few days away some parents seem to think its cutting it a little close.
Lou Lou Galvan say fighting the crowds isn’t worth a few cents in savings.
“Not really no that’s why I’m here right now. You’re hoping to beat the rush exactly yeah.”
But line up the pennies, some say and you'll find a few cents will go a long way.
“We’re gona take advantage in all the crowds were gone fight for them.”
The tax-free holiday officially begins at midnight tonight and runs through Sunday.
Consumers will not have to pay state or local sales tax on items less than 100 dollars ... no matter how much they buy.
