It's been 6 years since the fight began between the County and the City over who would build International Bridge number five. Recently both learned that their proposals had been denied, and tonight, City Council held a special meeting to figure out where to go from here.
As Concetta Callahan reports, the City, County, and Mexican government would all like to come together to keep this project alive, but Mexico has failed to commit. Not only does the City still not have the Mexican government's commitment to the project, the federal government has yet to commit, fearing it will be money spent to only lose more money. Recent news from Washington stated both the County and the City's applications to build bridge number five were too old. In the meantime, the City has been in negotiations with Mexico to keep this project alive.
Council member Mike Garza says they're not willing to commit to building another bridge that could potentially perform like Laredo's current international bridges.
"The reality is that more than likely this thing ain't gonna be built for the next decade" says Garza.

And these council people are advocating economic development? What do you mean no fifth bridge? Guess we are just going to sit back and let the "Valley" grab Laredo's trade traffic, pretty soon we will be saying that Laredo has 10 percent of the trade traffic going by. Unbeliveable, it took us 10 years to decide where we think we should put it, is it going to take us 10 more years to build it?

San Antonio Texas must be chomping at the bit now that our leaders could not construct the 5th INT'L bridge. What is wrong with our leaders? Who are they representing? This makes me sick. I always believed that the County of Webb should have gone at it alone. I was not wrong.
