Pro 8 Exclusive: New information on fate of horses found dying in El Cenizo

By Ray Gomez

We begin tonight with an update on a story we brought you last night.
A viewer's call tipped us to two horses allegedly abandoned in a vacant lot in El Cenizo.
One, fighting for its life.
Today, after exhausting every effort to save the young horse we sadly report she has lost her fight.
It's devastating news after a team of experts worked so hard to save the young horse.
Dr. Sandra Leyendecker, Veterinarian: "You're not gonna save her; she's already toxic."
"She's been down and rolling and sick for a long time."
Dr. Sandra Leyendecker, a Laredo veterinarian, rushed to the site to examine the sick horse.
"In my opinion she had less than a 10% chance of saving her."
"Because there was such a slim chance in saving this young horse, Dr. Leyendecker euthanized her immediately and within 10 seconds she was put out of her misery."
"She's very thin; she's extremely dehydrated because you can see how sunken in her eyes are. You can't tell now because we've already put her down but her gums were purple and usually that's toxicity and that means she's beyond surgical help."
Unfortunately this tragic scene has been seen in El Cenizo before City Commissioner Reynaldo Vasquez tells us.
"It has not been taken care of like it ought to be taken care of. We do have ordinances in this city regarding livestock, which people do not follow sometimes and when they do not follow them, this is what happens."
Livestock investigators confiscate the surviving horse to save him from the same fate.
Alfredo Rendon, livestock investigator, sheriff dept. "We're gonna keep him and it'll be returned to the owner if we find there was no cruelty to animals in this case."
The surviving horse will remain at the Webb County sheriff department's stables.
People have become interested in rescuing the horse for fear it will be returned to its owner.
The case is currently under investigation.
The owner could serve up to a year in prison if convicted on charges of animal cruelty.

AWFUL!!!!!!! That poor animal should have been "Put Down" by the deputy yesterday instead of waiting for the doctor to arrive. That horse was really suffering! The owner needs to do some TIME for that CRIME!
