Hog Wild! Javelinas invade north Laredo neighborhood

By Ray Gomez

Residents in north Laredo are keeping an eye out for wild animals roaming the streets in their neighborhood tonight.
Javelinas have been seen running through the Amazonia sub-division in north Laredo tonight.
At the site concerned residents told us they have seen the wild animals come dangerously close to not only adults, but also children.
The Javelina we caught on tape tonight was first seen on Quito street and actually entered a neighbor's garage.
Some believe the animals have been pushed out of their natural habitat because of the construction of new parks in the area.
Police were on the scene and called the game warden to wrangle up any animals still in the area.

its raining outside, its dark. what the hell are kids doing outside? its all one big lie. theyre probably inside playing with their Wii. Everyone uses the "what about the children" excuse for everything. its pathetic. we're encroaching on their habitat

This has happened in many parts of the world. From the elephants attacking villages in India to the apes pilfering in Africa. As Darwin wrote, animals will struggle and fight for survival, which is all the Javelina (not Javalina) are attempting to do. I understand money and human safety are more important to the community than the safety of the Javelina, so the logical solution is to separate them from the population and build a specialized habitat for them, otherwise the PETA may come into play

Very colorfully put "kid!" I also agree with this "expansion" program we seem to be engaged in; creating new neighborhoods with houses standing empty! We are the "violators" in this instance ..... we have and still are encroaching on the wild animal habitat and that needs to change. Problem .... GREED! The City is in on that GREED thing too! Wake up Laredo .... Wild animals are part of the draw to Texas ..... Enviromentally friendly too! Economics? Ask the local ranchers/money made/wildlife!

I live just south of that area, right near the edge of where the Village Heights homes abut the wooded area between the neighborhood and Loop 20. I've seen deer and javelina in my front yard every winter for the past 5 or 6 years, those mornings when I'm up around 4 or 5 in the morning.

I live on a ranch and see "wild animals" all the time. Whitetail Deer, javaline, feral hogs, bobcat, rattle snakes etc. We have small children as well. Why is everyone freaking out? It is part of our natural envirnoment. As long as you leave them alone you will NOT be attacked. You do have to be cautious if you threaten the animal or cause it to get in a defensive mode or if the animal is injured. Just stay away and indoors until they leave. No big deal - get over it.

Javelinas have been in the Winfield park for years. Deer are found all around the Winfield entrance area. We've seen javelina and deer trotting through the streets. We just leave them alone. They're looking for food, trying to survive since we (people) are taking away their natural habitat. I've yet to hear about anyone being attacked by them. Don't kill them! They haven't killed US for being in THEIR territory.

How about turning it into a learning experience? Teach your children respect for nature and animals. Hopefully, that will help you in that they will respect you, as a parent!!!(:
